Please note that this position is being offered on a Part Time basis, offering 20 hours per week, which will be worked as 4 hours per day, Monday to Friday, ideally 8am till Midday, however for the right candidate the start and finish time each day can be flexible within the opening hours of the centre (8am till 5.30pm) but working 4 hours each day across the working week is essential.
The salary for 20 hours per week, is £12,618.38 Per Annum.

The Opportunity
Working at the South Essex Family Centre, Church Road, Basildon, Essex. SS14 2E, this is a rare opportunity for someone with an interest in maintaining and developing our centre into a welcoming and well-maintained space for the families using it.
The Caretaker is a core member of an energetic and positive team who aim to make our centre a warm, welcoming, and comfortable place for the important work that takes place here.
The Caretaker and General Hand will be responsible for the maintenance of equipment and buildings to ensure the safety and security of properties and undertake minor repairs and decorating as appropriate. In addition, this will incorporate gardening duties including mowing, strimming, hedge trimming, weeding etc.
Work will range from undertaking statutory health and safety testing (training can be provided,) basic maintenance, decorating, supporting the cleaning team, to developing and maintaining the grounds.
Utilising skills and experience in property maintenance and a knowledge of equipment, will be important elements in undertaking this role effectively.
Accountabilities
- Responsible for ensuring all safety equipment and security systems are effectively maintained.
- Responsible for statutory testing- legionella testing, fire, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and panic alarms and to work with Mitie and the fire service to ensure compliance.
- Contributes to general property maintenance by ensuing minor repairs and property upkeep are conducted to a high standard.
- Responsible for undertaking routine vehicle checks, on occasion.
- Responsible for reporting issues and maintaining appropriate records with regard to systems i.e., fire alarms. Liaising with external contractors, when necessary, to ensure speedy resolution of issues.
- Responsible for maintaining grounds to a high standard to ensure safety and effective management of gardens. This will include purchasing necessary items as and when needed on behalf of the council and taking delivery of them.
- Responsible for preparing rooms, moving furniture and seasonal support e.g., storing decorations for Christmas, assembling outside furniture in summer.
- Contributes to cleaning and laundry duties within the home.
The Experience You Will Bring
Essential:
- Educated to RQF level 2 (GCSE) or equivalent by experience, which may include specific practical qualifications.
- Horticultural experience including the use of appropriate machinery, such as strimmer's, mowers, cutters, and experience of working in a gardening team.
- Experience of undertaking building repairs, internally and externally.
- Experience of how to maintain a hygienic and welcoming working environment
Desirable:
- Understanding of working in a setting that provides support to families, children, and young people.
- Evidence of a First Aid qualification, training and experience or willingness to undertake training in these areas.
- Evidence of Health and Safety experience, relevant qualifications and recent training or willingness to undertake training in these areas.
