The Code of Practice on the English language requirement for public sector workers, Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 requires that Councils ensure that all candidates applying for customer facing posts must be assessed in order to establish their fluency in English.


The criteria under special knowledge and experience on the job profile which is shown in this advert outlines what level of fluency you will be expected to demonstrate.  Therefore, it is essential that you provide examples in your application.

  • Carry out joinery, installation and maintenance work to a wide range of windows, doors and fire doors, including new build, occupied and tenanted buildings both large and small.
  • To interpret scale drawings, specifications and technical instructions and carry out the works in accordance with these with a detailed understanding of relevant documents, including the Wink Haus fire door installation manual.
  • To use their knowledge of the current and up to date building regulations to ensure the installations are compliant and comply with current legislation. 
  • To ensure that all installation or joinery work they undertake complies with the current building regulations. in accordance with drawings and specifications and the current Building Regulations, specifically in line with BS8213-4:2016, ‘survey and installation of windows and door sets’; BS8214:2016, ‘timber based fire door assemblies – code of practice’; and PAS24:2016, windows and doors enhanced security specification’
  • Using developed and time earned skills carry out fault finding and appropriate rectification works using diagnostic skills developed over time with experience.
  • Instruct, supervise and provide technical expertise to Apprentices, Trainees and Semi-skilled operatives and carry out initial, interim, and final inspections on works carried out by them.
  • Use tools, plant equipment, bladed moving machinery and materials as are applicable in their specific trade area safely and in accordance with the general activities of the construction industry.
  • Ensuring that all HSE advise and regulations are followed to letter including statuary regulation ie condition of use, duration, dust suppression, noise etc.

The ideal candidate:

  • At least two years’ experience of hands-on joinery or installation works, preferably involving window and door products.
  • Knowledge of relevant Building Regulations and installation standards including British Standards related to window and door installation.
  • Experience of working on construction sites preferred.
  • Experience of installing fire doors a distinct advantage.
  • CSCS card holder
  • Numerate and literate with good grasp of basic English and mathematics.
  • Being physically fit and active is essential. Past experience of a manual handling-focused role an advantage as the job involves moving, lifting and carrying of heavy window and door products.
  • Able to work alone and on own initiative, and as part of a team.
  • Full clean driving licence including Class C1 is essential for this post as the driving of a large Council van is a primary part of the job.
  • Willing to undertake any training required by management to enhance their job skills and knowledge
