Put a roof over vulnerable heads

In Kensington and Chelsea, we put local people at the heart of decision-making, working in partnership with them to provide quality services that are responsive, effective and efficient. Everything we do is focused on raising the quality of life for all – not least with this role, where you’ll help people on our housing register get the homes they need – as quickly as possible.

The Role:

This role is part of a team of allocations officers that are responsible for shortlisting and nominating applicants on the Council Housing Register to properties that are available for lettings. The nominations are made on behalf of Housing Management and other Registered Providers. A key part of this role is to engage with applicants in a compassionate manner, and to listen to their concerns with empathy. This is integral to the officers understanding the needs of the applicants and in turn ensuring they are matched to the property that is assessed as the most suitable for their needs.

With the national housing crisis and its significant impact on London boroughs, particularly here in Kensington and Chelsea, there is a severe shortage of social housing supply. It is therefore ever more essential to ensure that offers of social housing are not only carried out in accordance with Council’s Allocations Scheme, but the shortlisting and nomination process is communicated clearly to unsuccessful applicants to provide the required clarity on how this is applied in each individual case.

As part of this role, you will be expected to work to deadlines for nominations, and to balance often competing priorities of residents requiring more time to make decisions, and landlords wanting to receive nomination details of the successful applicant. It is therefore essential that you have demonstrable ability to negotiate and build trusting relationships that deliver long lasting outcomes for the benefit of the applicants.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

We are looking for a compassionate individual with a focus on providing excellent customer service and a positive and open-minded approach to continuous learning and improvement.

Previous housing experience is desirable but not essential. You will need to be a proficient IT user with good working knowledge of systems, and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.  You will need to be organised with a can-do attitude, natural negotiation skills, and motivated to support or some of the most vulnerable in our community.
