Do you have a strong customer focus? Are you confident as well as diplomatic with a good command of written and verbal English? Are you looking for a role that marks a milestone in someone’s life?

Our Registration Service is a statutory service delivered by the County Council on behalf of the Registrar General and the General Register Office (GRO), which is part of the Home Office.  Our main purpose is to create accurate and timely records of all births, still-births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships occurring across North Yorkshire.  We also offer other services such as citizenship ceremonies, and non-statutory civil ceremonies such as Renewal of Vows.

The role

As our Registrar you will be responsible for registering births, deaths, and carrying out all related duties and issuing certification, organise and conduct civil marriage and civil partnership ceremonies, ensuring that the necessary civil preliminaries are performed before a ceremony takes place and that post-ceremony procedures are completed, deal with marriage preliminaries including the taking of notices of marriage and civil partnership and undertaking of pre-ceremony discussions, and register marriages or civil partnerships at the Registration Office or approved venues and issue certification as laid down by legislation.

You will join a supportive team in the Harrogate office. The working days are Monday to Friday, weekend ceremonies are flexible and you will receive additional pay for performing these. Ceremonies are not just at the Registration Office, you may be required to perform ceremonies in any of our approved venues, either way you will have a chance to be part of someone’s special day.

Full training will be given and you will have the opportunity to gain a formal qualification if you so wish after a period of initial training and sufficient experience.

What you will bring

You will be confident and diplomatic with a good command of written and verbal English, including accuracy in spelling. You must also be able to demonstrate a high standard of professional service delivery and positive customer focus.   You must have experience of dealing with the general public, preferably in a frontline service, with good communication and organisational skills and the ability to deal with customers from all backgrounds, sometimes in difficult situations. A key part of the role of Registrar is clerical data input using various systems: accuracy is very important and you will receive training.
