Job role
Deputy Chief Executive
Contract Type
Full time

This is an exciting opportunity to join Lambeth’s Development Management Service to shape new development in the borough and support the Council’s ambitious Planning service as it embraces the digital agenda. The role will be integral to delivering objectives of the Sustainable Growth and Opportunities Directorate, in particular helping to facilitate inclusive growth, reducing inequality and encouraging investment in the borough through securing high quality, sustainable and safe buildings, and places, and promoting the council’s Climate Emergency response.

Lambeth is a vibrant inner London borough that attracts significant investment and offers a wide range of challenges and opportunities.  Stretching from Waterloo and Vauxhall in the north, through Brixton and Clapham in the centre to Streatham and Norwood in the south, it has a distinctive mix of places each with its own character and community.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing part of a team of Principal and Senior Planning Officers, and working with the Head of Strategic Applications, you will programme strategic planning applications and Planning Performance Agreements (PPA) in the borough, as well as Council led applications, to ensure a co-ordinated approach to planning, development, inward investment, economic sustainability and regeneration.

The role requires considerable experience in development management, people management and collaborative working in a local planning authority context and a politically sensitive environment.

The successful candidate will be a strong, inspirational and supportive leader who can build and manage an effective and creative team of principal planning officers. You will need to be able to deliver a high-quality service, negotiate the best possible development outcomes, whilst also growing new business opportunities and developing new innovative approaches. You will need to be an effective communicator who can engage well with developers, investors, partners and citizens and build good relationships with members.

Candidates should have an RTPI recognised degree-level qualification in Town Planning or equivalent and be eligible for membership of the RTPI.  All candidates should have a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging planning legislation, policy and guidance relevant to a London borough.

The salary for this role will be enhanced through a Market Supplement of 7%.

The Council is committed to accepting positions with a range of flexible working arrangements including Job Sharing.
