Wirral is home to vibrant, energetic and engaged communities, people who take real ownership of their local area and are passionate about making Wirral a better place. The council and its partners have pledged to #BeTheDifference.

We’ve got ambitious targets to meet by 2025. To achieve everything we have promised to our residents, we need people who are driven and ready to deliver the very best for our communities - #BeTheDifference.

Wirral is a fantastic place with a unique environment and outstanding natural beauty. Being a peninsular and boarded by sea on 3 sides, we are very aware of how vulnerable Wirral and its communities are to the effects of climate change. Wirral Council therefore declared an environment and climate emergency in 2019 and a corporate priority since has been to taken action in response to the declaration. This includes making a commitment for the Council to become net carbon neutral by 2030, as a contribution to Wirral's overall target of being net carbon neutral by 2041. To achieve everything we have promised to our residents, we need people who are driven and ready to deliver the very best for our communities - #BeTheDifference.

We are looking for a highly experienced and committed professional to lead the Council's response to the emergency declaration, as well supporting Wirral's established climate change partnership and working with Liverpool City Region colleagues to develop the region's climate strategy.

We have made progress against our commitments, launching a plan of action with route map to net carbon neutrality, establishing dedicated climate emergency resources, committing to becoming a carbon literate organisation and establishing our Tree, Woodland and Hedgerow Strategy.

The new post of Climate Emergency Manager will lead the delivery of the Council's plan of action, as well as being the Council's leading representative for the Cool Wirral climate change partnership. The Climate Emergency Manager will support Cool Wirral's oversight of the climate change strategy for Wirral (Cool2).

The ambitious targets for the Council and Wirral require a detailed understanding of climate change and its impact, a strong conviction to act, experience in project management, and strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, to ensure such commitments are achieved.

The Climate Emergency Manager position therefore requires such skills and experience, to deliver the necessary change and conviction to inspire people to get involved and make their contribution.

The Climate Emergency Manager will lead stakeholder relationship management through influencing and engaging with key stakeholders, businesses, residents, community groups as crucially our own staff, to promote low carbon and climate change initiatives across Wirral.

To be considered for this key role you will be educated to degree level or equivalent qualification or experience, highly experienced in managing strategies to address the impact of climate change, have a minimum of 3 to 5 years' experience of leading on large scale programmes of work or major projects and have demonstrable experience of strategy formulation, including the ability to put the strategy into action and securing funding for projects.

This is a challenging and demanding, but exciting role that is fully supported both strategically and politically. Come and make your mark in Wirral and lead the way to net carbon neutrality.

Should you wish to discuss informally, please contact Mike Cockburn on email mikecockburn@wirral.gov.uk
