Putting the needs of our residents first, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is an exceptional place in which to pursue your career goals. Working collaboratively with both local businesses and our residents, we are determined to understand what both groups want us to achieve, and how we can best develop services that will meet their immediate and long-term needs. With a focus on protecting the health and wellbeing of our local population, they deliver a high quality proactive and responsive service – and it is within this friendly team that you could find a thrilling challenge.

The Role:

As a Senior Officer in the Food Safety & Infectious Disease team, you will be one of the operational leads on more complex cases, guiding and advising the rest of the team tasked with protecting the health of consumers by overseeing the production and provision of food being sold in the Borough. You will be delivering high quality regulatory frontline services, handling a broad array of challenges, working across anything from small businesses who are subject to complaints about their food safety, through to monitoring the quality of food being produced by street vendors at the Notting Hill Carnival. With a focus on reducing food borne illnesses and contamination of food, you will also handle issues relating to labelling requirements, and you will see to it that food has been legally imported. Ensuring all residents have access to safe drinking water supplies, you will be tasked with projects contributing to public health and food safety and standards. As the team’s subject matter expert, you will mentor less experienced colleagues, overseeing their day-to-day activities. As the leading source of knowledge in specialist areas and relevant legislation, you will oversee complex assessments, investigations, enforcement actions and court proceedings.

This is a career-defining opportunity within a busy service. There is therefore great scope to further your professional knowledge particularly as we can support you with ongoing training opportunities. As such you will be keen to learn, and you will be a team player who has comprehensive communication skills. This will include the capacity to take detailed notes and translate these into insightful reports, and you will be comfortable working with people from all walks of life.

With a degree or diploma in Environmental Health, you will be registered with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board, and you will ideally have experience in a local government role. Well versed in enforcement actions, you will ideally be a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, and it would be preferred if you have additional qualifications in food safety or Public Health. With a background in inspecting Food Hygiene Category A and B premises, you will be capable of advising directors, managers, employees and complainants, and you will understand the technicalities of closing food premises. With a wide range of knowledge in the field, your expertise will extend from dealing with imported foods and products of animal origin, through to serving notices and handling notifications of infectious diseases and outbreaks.
