Our roads, footpaths and cycleways are vital to the communities, businesses and services within the villages, towns and city that make up Bath and North East Somerset, as well as to the millions of visitors that come here every year. It’s a varied district that includes two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the thriving World Heritage City of Bath.

The Council’s Street Works Team is responsible for managing all aspects of road works and events that take place on our highway network. There will always be a need for road works to take place, whether it’s for the renewal of gas pipes, new superfast broadband or resurfacing roads but we strive to minimise the impact on those who are affected by those works and ensure they’re undertaken as quickly and safely as possible.

We have a vacancy for a Principal Street Works Engineer, which is a team leader role responsible for 12 staff and the overall management of road works on our highway network, including our street works permit scheme. The person we’re looking for will have significant experience of managing road works at a supervisory or team leader level and be able to show their exceptional ability to influence works promoters for the maximum benefit of the highway network and its users.

The team also deals with network licences such as skips and scaffolding, provides advice on behalf of the Highways & Traffic Group regarding events on the highway, and liaises with our film office regarding the frequent filming which takes place in Bath.

A positive attitude is essential as is the ability to build and maintain a strong team culture, together with forming strong relationships with utility companies, other council teams and local stakeholders. It’s also important to have experience of managing budgets.

Above all, we’re after a person who wants to make a difference to how road works are managed in Bath & North East Somerset and can lead with the drive and determination to enable others to do so too.

Your main place of work will be the award-winning, modern Civic Centre in Keynsham, halfway between Bath and Bristol, easily accessible via car or public transport, with a train station 5 minutes’ walk away.
