We are currently looking to recruit to two exciting opportunities who will join us and play a role in improving West Berkshire’s highways.  The Career Graded Technician will work as part of the ITS & Sustainable Travel team assisting in the delivery of the Environment Department’s Capital Programme and the Senior Technician will work within our busy Asset Management team to improve the resilience of our highway network in the face of a changing climate.

Career Graded Technician

Our ITS and Sustainable Travel team is primarily responsible for using technology to manage the flow of traffic by operating our Traffic Signals, managing our Urban Traffic Control system and monitoring CCTV. We also install Electric Vehicle chargepoints on public roads and deliver small projects to improve infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users.  This vacancy is an ideal opportunity to begin or further your career in this rapidly developing field.  If you have some relevant experience then you could be more suited to the Senior Technician role, otherwise the Trainee Technician or Technician level would be more appropriate.  Whichever post you apply for we ask that you have a genuine interest in using technology to manage traffic and an awareness of the importance of providing good facilities for non-car users.

Senior Technician

Under the general direction of the Asset Manager & Principal Engineer you will provide professional and technical services consistent with your qualifications and experience in relation to the delivery of highways and transport services in West Berkshire and in particular land drainage and highway drainage projects.

You will be responsible for the design and supervision of small to medium size drainage improvement projects, including the compilation of bills of quantities and the financial management of such schemes.  You will also help deliver the council’s duties under the Flood and Water Management Act and help investigate and respond to flood incidents.

You should hold a BTEC Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering or equivalent and 3 years’ experience.

These roles provide challenging opportunities for ambitious, self-motivated individuals who can demonstrate an aptitude for working well within a team, under pressure and to strict deadlines.

Applicants should review the criteria listed within each job description for the post.  The required skills and experience will differ depending on the level being applied for.

West Berkshire Council offer excellent employment benefits such as flexible working, access to a wide range of relevant training, local government pension scheme, family friendly policies, a range of local discounts and much more. You will also be entitled to a generous annual leave entitlement of 26 days per annum rising to a maximum of 32 days depending on the grade of your role.

For an informal discussion about either role, please contact Colin Brassington (Principal Engineer) on 01635 503733 for the Career Graded Technician role and Stuart Clark (Principal Engineer) on 01635 519857 for the Senior Technician role.

Closing date: 7th October 2021
