A bit about us

We have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and committed individuals to join our Highways Development Management Team as an Assistant Estate Roads Engineer.

Our busy team provides advice on a variety highways and transportation matters, including planning applications for new development across the county, working with developers to find solutions which unlock new housing and economic development. We are passionate and committed to transforming our communities by enabling high quality development which is safe and accessible; working to create desirable places for people to live and work as part of Somerset’s ambitious growth plans.

The team is an integral part of the planning process, dealing with the highways aspects of new development, overseeing transport assessments and travel plans prepared by developers, and authorising changes to the highway network such as the construction of new estate roads.

Here's what you can expect to be doing

You will be working as part of a team of about twenty people in the Highways Development Management function.  You will assist a senior engineer in checking and reviewing the proposed layout of new estate roads that will be built by developers as part of new development proposals (such as new housing estates, business parks, retail and employment areas) as part of the process of granting planning consent.

You will work with the planning authority and developers to make sure that road layouts are appropriate and comply with safety and accessibility standards and technical guidance.   You will be responsible for ensuring that developers have appropriate financial cover in place and will process legal agreements and licenses necessary to enable construction to take place.

You will be involved with a wide range of new development from small sites though to major enterprise zones and large extensions to our main towns including Taunton’s new garden communities.

A few things about you

We would love to hear from you, if you:

- Have knowledge and experience of highways and transport technical issues.

- Are a confident communicator and approachable, with people at all levels.

- Have engineering or other relevant technical or professional qualification.

- Demonstrable experience in the design or audit of new highway layouts would be beneficial

The Unitary Council of 110 elected members is responsible for deciding the democratic arrangements for the Council, agreeing our policy framework and each year’s budget.
