Job Details

The main purpose of the job is to register births, deaths and marriages, take notices of marriage and civil partnership and to conduct a full range of ceremonies including marriage, civil partnership, naming and renewal of vows at York Register Office and other sites in the City.

This post is 23 hours per week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday,  plus 1 Saturday in 6 on a flexi basis

Working in a fast paced environment you will have the ability to use your own initiative and enthusiasm to support taking the service forward.

In this busy office your good administrative skills, attention to detail and your ability to use specialist web-based applications are essential.  An ability to digest legislation will be required as you will gain a detailed knowledge of the handbooks for Registration Officers.

In this time of modernisation and growth for the service, you will proactively adapt to new ways of working and ensure a professional approach is taken at all times.

You will enjoy working as part of a team and also working on your own ensuring you are able to build positive and professional relationships with peers, colleagues, customers at all times.

We hold ceremonies at our York office and at other sites around the city including hotels and museums, so you will be able to speak confidently in highly public situations.  As you will be dealing with customers in extremely sensitive situations, commitment to high quality customer service and your excellent inter-personal and communication skills will be an asset.

We are looking for candidates with registration experience and experience working in a designated register office is desirable.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2: Can express him/herself spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.

The duties of this post require the postholder to undertake a basic Criminal Record check (unspent convictions only) via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

The work place is York Register Office (Although the base is York Register Office you could be required to work at other venues around the city if required)
