We’re looking for a Litigation Executive who wants to broaden their legal experience with traded work within our Legal and Democratic Service.
As our Litigation Executive you will assist the Senior Solicitor (Education, Employment and Litigation) in providing a legal service on People Services’ issues to all Legal and Democratic Services clients, primarily debt recovery and civil litigation. You will provide a comprehensive debt recovery service for all directorates within the Council, external clients, and any Schools that subscribe to the Legal Advice Scheme in line with pre-action protocols for debt rcovery and the Civil Procedure Rules with minimal supervision, as well as ensuring the service provides a comprehensive litigation service by the preparation and issue of court proceedings, preparation of evidence of appropriate complexity and other papers for presentation to Court, and briefing Counsel, attending with Counsel and liaison with Counsel on cases. Our Legal Service is part of Legal and Democratic Services (‘LDS’) within the Central Services Directorate. We provide a range of services to the County of North Yorkshire, and the role of the Legal Service is to support the provision by providing a comprehensive and efficient legal service to the Directorates, the Council’s Executive, full Council, Committees and Members, and external clients. The nature of the work requires a flexible and versatile approach as it will change from time to time in response to the changing needs of the Council, and its developing initiatives. The post is required to work with colleagues and Members at every level within the organisation, with external clients and partners, and to manage the performance of staff within its responsibility. The budget of the service is in part dependent on income from external sources and the post must play its part in ensuring successful income generation, and in ensuring compliance with Law Society Professional Standards, and the achievement of Lexcel accreditation.
To be successful you must hold an A’ Level Law and/or Law Degree or appropriate alternative qualifications and/or work experience, have strong knowledge of current guidance and legislation in relation to debt recovery and civil litigation law and procedure including the Civil Procedure Rules, have a working knowledge of legal, statutory and Court procedures and practices and of attending Court if relevant. Have demonstrable experience of working in a legal environment, and some experience of collection and analysis of statistical information. You also must have exceptional communication skills both verbal and written and an eye for details, as well as good interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work to deadlines
