The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) currently has an exciting opportunity for a Head of Agriculture to provide effective management for the Agricultural Service of the Natural Resources Department.     The Role

The Head of Agriculture will have operational responsibility for the service unit consisting of a defined group of functions and services, ensuring that the unit operates within the Government’s policies and strategies to achieve the objectives and performance standards set for the unit within the resources allocated.

The service unit oversees the implementation of all Agriculture programmes, including the development and management of the National Stud Flock, Research & Development utilising farmer-based data and inputs and extending initiatives available to Falkland Islands farms to ensure outstanding results and a high level of quality across all Agriculture programmes.

The Person

The successful candidate will develop and implement an innovative and ambitious agriculture strategy and in particular cultivate strong relationships with partner organisations to ensure a one-Government approach to delivering key national objectives.

The individual best suited to this role will have at least 5 years’ demonstrable and effective management experience to lead and manage the team to achieve the objectives outlined in the Department’s Business Plan.

Essential criteria includes a degree in Agricultural Science, Veterinary Science or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution and a minimum of 10 years’ post qualifying experience working in the management of Agricultural Extension (i.e. the application of scientific research and new knowledge to agricultural practices through farmer education) and/or a senior agricultural advisory capacity within a rural environment.

The Package

  • Fixed Term Contract up to 4 years.
  • Starting Salary - £50,771 up to £56,292 per annum (depending on qualifications and experience) rising to £76,209.
  • Eligibility for a 25% Gratuity (taxable).
  • 41 days paid leave, 30 days annual leave and 11 public holidays.
  • Relocation Allowance, to help with moving costs.
  • Flights Package for you and any recognised dependents residing with you at post both at the beginning and end of contract, along with additional annual return flights contingent on the duration of the contract.
  • Government Housing for rent and a starter pack to help you settle in.
