You will work in the traditional areas of design, technical approvals, supervision and asset management, but you will also take in the inception and constitutional areas of projects.  The multi-disciplinary team you will be joining has professional engineers who work together across all areas of highways, intelligent transport, bridges, lighting, signs, drainage, and developer-led works.  With the Council containing most services under one roof you will also meet/get to know lots of other specialists, including our colleagues in transport, planning, building services and parks teams.

Reporting directly to the Team Leader for Structures and Street Lighting we are looking for a Senior Engineer to join our team.  A typical week for you could include:

•           Managing, prioritising and programming structures projects to ensure they are delivered on time and on budget

•           Completion of scheme packs and associated design work, including structural analysis, specifications and general scheme constraints. Typical schemes involve deck strengthening, footbridge/retaining wall replacements, brick/stonework refurbishment, maintenance painting/steelwork refurbishment, parapet replacements and waterproofing system/joint replacements. Ensuring that this process achieves high quality and cost effective outputs.

•           Overseeing the annual programme of general and principal inspections, responding to day to day public enquiries and general asset management/testing of assets. This includes structural assessments, the use of our asset management software and overseeing abnormal load movements. 

•           Specialist technical input into the supervision of structures projects. An associated knowledge of construction contract management would be desirable.

•           Management of the health and safety aspects of projects, including acting as Principal Designer.

•           Input into negotiations with developers/the completion of Technical Approvals to ensure that all adopted structures assets meet the Council’s quality standards and adequate commuted sums are obtained.  Ensuring that the associated fee income is then acquired.

•           Supporting and mentoring colleagues within our career-grade scheme

•           Any necessary site visits to enable the above, including independent travelling to site when required.

We are searching for people who have:

•           Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent (essential)

•           Chartered status or Incorporated (and working towards Chartered)

•           Membership of a professional institution e.g. ICE or IStructE
