About Us:

Keep our local residents safe with your unwavering standards.

As a member of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, you will find a uniquely supportive and forward-thinking working environment. Here, we put our residents at the heart of every decision. We are committed to creating a great quality of life for every sector of society, so we work in partnership with both our residents and local businesses to understand their needs and the challenges they are facing, and we translate this insight into responsive services. Our exceptional Food Safety & Infectious Disease team is central to this work, and it is against this backdrop that you could find the most thrilling challenge of your career.

The Role:

As a member of our Environmental Health directorate, you will have the scope to protect consumers by ensuring that all food sold in the borough is being produced and provided safely. Our team are responsible for ensuring food businesses are playing their part in reducing food borne illnesses and contamination of food. We also see to it that compositional and labelling requirements are being met, that private water supplies are being monitored and that food is being legally imported. You will be at the heart of this work as you inspect food businesses to ensure they are complying with food safety standards. Investigating allergen complaints and serious incidents, you will determine whether businesses have let their standards slip – and if they have you will take the relevant enforcement actions, including preparing all legal paperwork and attending Court. We are a very busy team, so this is a fascinating opportunity to manage your own workload and to learn quickly as you take ownership of more complex cases. With a wide range of challenges to tackle, you could handle anything from monitoring food vendors at the Notting Hill Carnival through to investigating food poisoning notifications and outbreaks. As such you will work with a wide range of stakeholders such as Public Health England, and you will process and approve (as appropriate) applications, notifications, referrals, consultations, schemes, licences, registrations and grants.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

To excel in our fast-paced team, you will have a degree or diploma in Environmental Health. With the capacity to inspect Food Hygiene Category A and B premises for food hygiene, food standards and health and safety, you will have experience of examining food safety management systems, serving notices and closing food premises when necessary. You will have a background in dealing with imported foods and products of animal origin, and you will have the capacity to interpret legislation and translate this knowledge for a wide range of audiences. With the ability to sample foods and experience of dealing with notifications of infectious disease and outbreaks, you will have an up-to-date knowledge of conducting health and safety risk assessments. You will also have good written and verbal communication skills, and you will be capable of taking detailed notes when conducting your investigations and assessments. Crucially, you will be keen to further your knowledge with the exceptional training opportunities that we can provide you with.

Join us in this highly varied work, and you can look forward to a package that includes a competitive salary, a high-quality pension scheme and generous annual leave plus bank holidays.

Please apply online explaining how you meet the requirements set out in the person specification and job description. CV’s alone will not be considered for this role.
