Contract Type

Stockport is a great place to live, work, play and connect, but we also want it to be a nationally recognised beacon for environmental sustainability. As a result we established Stockport Climate Action Now (CAN), a cross-party task force focused on the actions Stockport must take to make a difference on climate change and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2038. With a £1 billion transformation underway across the borough to create new jobs, homes, leisure opportunities and transport links, there’s potential to make a real impact.

The challenge

Providing leadership of Stockport CAN, you will embed the cultural shift required within the borough to meet our commitments to tackling the climate emergency. You will look at everything from reducing the carbon footprint of the council’s offices, fleet and machinery to the introduction of meadows and extensive tree planting. Your influence will touch every service that the council delivers, every officer’s individual behaviour and the vast majority of citizens and businesses within the borough.

Managing a small team of project managers and commissioned consultants, you will deliver complex, high value-projects and initiatives. This is an ambitious agenda and your success will depend on building productive relationships, establishing strategic partnerships and securing external funding.

The person

You will be both a senior leader and an agent of change, capable of transforming our culture, promoting innovation, and capitalising on capacity in local communities and businesses. As well as a sincere personal commitment to climate action, you’ll have a proven ability develop and deliver a programme of cultural change within a corporate context. You’re an exceptional communicator with well-honed negotiating and influencing skills, able to build successful relationships with community groups, voluntary organisations and non-council partners, as well as local businesses. Strong project management skills are essential.
