About the team

The Major Projects team forms part of North Yorkshire County Council’s Highways and Transportation service; its main focus is to manage the delivery of the council’s programme of major highway schemes. It is responsible for managing development, planning, statutory procedures, design, procurement and implementation of such schemes, as identified in the council’s capital programme. The recent retirement of our Major Projects Manager means that we are now looking for an experienced individual to join our team. 

Your role

As the Major Projects Manager, you will be responsible for managing and monitoring the the delivery of major capital schemes and for all aspects of budgetary control and reporting. You will provide leadership, direction, motivation and support to ensure delivery of the major schemes programme which includes an exciting opportunity to deliver the diversion of the A59 at Kex Gill between Harrogate and Skipton, which has just been awarded Programme Entry status by the Department for Transport.This scheme will move this major road to the other side of the valley that it passes through to avoid the potential for landslips and improve the resilience of this key link. 

This high profile project is accompanied by a portfolio of other key projects that you will be responsible for. As part of the highways management team, you will support the Assistant Director through contributing to the service plan and providing direction on the production, delivery, monitoring and review of the plan. 

About you

This role will be pivotal to the effective delivery of our Highways and Transportation service, therefore requires an experienced leader who can confidently drive service delivery to achieve maximum results. 

You have experience of working on multi stakeholder projects, with proven ability to communicate effectively and influence, negotiate and challenge where necessary, in order to ensure an efficient and effective service. You have exceptional organisational skills, and are able to meet deadlines and manage your own workload effectively within agreed parameters.

Ownership of previous projects, including design, costs, and procurement, programme, documentation, and site activities is highly desirable. You will ideally be a Chartered Engineer, however we see this role as a great opportunity for someone looking for their next challenge within Highways with the potential to achieve Chartered Engineer status in the future.
