City of York Council's busy highway adoptions team is looking to recruit an adoptions inspector to assess and inspect the standard of works undertaken at development sites in York, during the construction of prospective adopted highways and for development related works within the existing highway.

You will need to demonstrate a strong knowledge of highway construction techniques, preferably with at least five years of experience as a highway inspector or in a similar role.

You will also need to demonstrate:

  • Experience of working with developers, contractors and their representatives,
  • Experience in assessing temporary traffic management schemes and a clear appreciation of the practicalities of working within the highway network,
  • A good understanding and knowledge of relevant legislation, codes of practice, construction industry standards and criteria.

You will often work on your own, making decisions to enable developments to progress, whilst ensuring that members of the public are safe and that the correct construction techniques are used to avoid future maintenance issues and reduce long term costs for the highway authority.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C1: Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and, as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous Learning & Development.
