Job Details

A bit about us

Somerset County Council are looking for graduates. We currently have exciting opportunities in our Bridges & Structures team.

The Bridges and Structures team is responsible for the management and maintenance of the County’s Highway bridge, culvert and retaining wall stock which stands at over 2500 structures. This stock contains a wide variety of asset types in respect of their form, construction, material, span and location. There are a significant number of masonry arches and simply supported reinforced concrete slabs as well as retaining walls of different construction forms and, of course, large multi-span structures, all located in both rural and urban areas. The oldest asset is Tarr Steps a 17 span Clapper Bridge reportedly dating back to prehistoric times located on Exmoor. We also have a bascule bridge, many swing bridges, footbridges, fords, railway, road and watercourse structures in our diverse stock.

Somerset County Council is an innovative employer where you will be encouraged to learn, develop and flourish. We’re looking for graduates with new ideas and a can-do attitude to help us deliver public services for the people of Somerset.

What our current graduates say:

‘I feel supported in all I do’ and ‘from day one you’re involved in exciting projects’.

Also ‘SCC has a great working culture and I am encouraged to take advantage of benefits such as flexi-time, which allows me to balance my home and work lives effectively’

Here's what you can expect to be doing

The role primarily includes the following activities

·     Carrying out/assisting with inspections & reporting

·     Initiate design, deliver & supervise bridge maintenance/improvement schemes

·     Liaison with statutory bodies, affected parties, consultants & contractors

·     Act as a point of contact for public, parish, district councils

·     Support senior members of the team with preparation of reports, schedules, calculations, costings, presentations etc.

·     Assist with rationalisation of asset management data

As well as delivering our own projects, we also perform statutory functions, in assessing and approving other private developments within the county, ensuring that all proposed new routes meet the county’s standards, prior to our adoption.

A few things about you

We are happy to consider all applicants at degree level as well as HND (level 5) higher apprentices.

You will be enthusiastic, curious and eager to develop your career. You will need to display a positive approach and be able to deal with problem solving, seeing it as a challenge rather than an obstacle. You will be able to think logically to show how you have come to a recommendation when thinking about different issues. You should have the ability to manage complex tasks, work under own initiative and manage your own workload efficiently.  You will have great communication and team working skills and be excited to contribute to this vital service within Somerset County Council.
