up to £46,359 per annum

As part of a specialist team you will work closely with colleagues to ensure the delivery of a high performing, client facing legal service which proactively embraces change.

As a Solicitor/Barrister/Legal Executive you will ensure the provision of high-quality advice, information, analysis and interpretation to clients to underpin effective decision making, meaningful performance management and meet statutory requirements. You will achieve good client satisfaction levels and make a real and demonstrable difference to the delivery of Essex Legal Services' business and the business of our clients.

You will also contribute to business development activity to further Essex Legal Services' strategy around trading and shared services.

Post-holders in the team will report to the Legal Services Manager (Highways and Environment).

Key Accountabilities

* Is a role model for client service delivery across Essex Legal Services, providing input to business wide training and discussion groups; provides a win-win situation for both the client and Essex Legal Services;

* Demonstrates superior communication skills and uses those to influence others; seeking solutions to difficult situations which satisfy the interests of multiple parties in order to settle disputes equitably; seeking out diverse opinions and information and reconciling contradictions to improve overall outcomes; and is able to evaluate decisions of others ensuring all relevant perspectives and impacts have been addressed;

* Anticipates the need for change and helps others adjust their priorities and activities to meet the needs of the situation; demonstrates adaptability to others;

* Volunteers to undertake challenging tasks; setting targets and monitoring measures to identify trends across processes; taking responsibility for removing barriers that impact the effectiveness of the team meeting its objectives;

* Establishes personal credibility through making informed decisions and taking responsibility for ensuring they are implemented in a timely fashion; exhibits decisiveness and good judgement, even under ambiguous and challenging circumstances;

* Handles multiple priorities and divides resources between them; developing contingency plans to address unexpected situations and reallocates resources as needed;

* Balances organisational and individual needs whilst inspiring individuals to share their opinions and ideas; working with the team to allow time for learning, sharing ideas and service improvement;

* Understands how external social and political factors impact Essex Legal Services' resourcing and shows an active interest in the impact that own team has on the organisation; optimises team performance through supporting and understanding organisational goals; demonstrates and raises awareness of strategic issues.

Skills and knowledge

Qualified solicitor or barrister or legal executive with full valid practising certificate and 2 + years post qualification experience We would expect a lawyer with the given PQE to have gained the level of experience required but this does not preclude applications from those with more or less PQE.

* Ability to establish credibility with Directors, senior management and other key stakeholders including LPA representatives'

* Ability to communicate effectively as well as good drafting and negotiating skill

* Demonstrably good case management skills

* Ability to contribute effectively in a large complex organisation with plans for radical change and improvement;

* Within the highways and environment team you will require knowledge and understanding of providing legal advice in a public sector setting; including but not limited to advising on a full range of planning issues at district and county level, preparing documents including a substantial number of section 106 agreements and undertakings (drafting and negotiating bi or tri party, with local LPAs, can include s278 and other statutory agreements for development sites), dealing with public inquiries, advising at committee for the County Council's statutory roles such as education authority, highway authority and mineral and waste planning authority and for other local authority clients.

* Whilst travel is not usually expected there may occasionally be a need to be off site.
