We’re is seeking to appoint a number of Health Promotion Officers to our Public Health Team.

The Public Health Department is a progressive team committed to improving health and tackling inequalities in York. The post holder will be a key member of the Public Health Team, supporting our residents through the coronavirus pandemic and beyond.

Working as a Health Promotion Officer you will help to tackle inequalities in health and support people to understand and follow government advice relating to COVID19 by targeting resources on individuals and groups at greatest risk.  You will be a key member of the local Test and Trace team and will be expected to deliver accurate and consistent messages on COVID19 by working with communities. In the event of an outbreak situation your knowledge of, and relationships with, communities in York will be key to supporting our efforts to contain the outbreak.

You will also work to support the wider work of the public health team to improve health. This could be through signposting into our Health Trainer service or our Healthy Child Service, assisting with behaviour change campaigns or supporting the delivery of interventions.

  • Skilled at listening, influencing, negotiating and motivating individuals in relation to health behaviours.
  • Able to hold sensitive conversations as part of the Covid response.
  • Able to demonstrate an in-depth local knowledge of York.

You are required to be fit for the delivery aspects of the work, have the flexibility to work evenings and weekends. Our response to the Covid pandemic is 7 days per week and therefore candidates must be prepared and able to work on a rota basis to cover this period and be able to travel independently.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2: Can express him/herself spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.

The ability to speak a community language would be desirable although not essential.
