The Council
Northumberland County Council operates a huge range of services across one of the largest counties in the UK. Local Government’s ongoing challenges and the diversity of our residents means we have to work smarter. That’s why we want bold, creative and agile thinkers who can help us move forward and innovate.

Northumberland is the northernmost county of England, bordering Cumbria, County Durham, Tyne and Wear and the Scottish Borders. Officially named the best place to visit in the British Travel Awards in 2018, Northumberland is also an excellent place to work and live with ancient castles; hidden gardens; unspoilt beaches; rolling hills; sweeping views and friendly market towns it has a cultural heritage all of its own. https://www.discoverourland.co.uk/live

The Service
The primary purpose of Neighbourhood Services is to work with local communities and other key stakeholder organisations to improve the physical appearance and quality of life within our communities, making them more sustainable, self-sufficient and safer places.

Neighbourhood Services is part of the Local Services Directorate and this post is responsible for refuse and recycling, street cleansing, grounds maintenance, countryside and green spaces and markets, also supporting winter maintenance, flooding and extreme weather response.

The role
We are looking for a strategic, innovative and performance-focused leader to join us as Contracts and Commercial Manager, delivering Northumberland’s Waste Strategy and managing the provision of countywide waste services through a team of technical officers, specialist staff and external contractors.

The role is about being innovative and continually finding opportunities to improve. You will work closely with a range of stakeholders to ensure that the way we manage our resources and waste delivers maximum financial and environmental benefits for the council and its residents.

You will take lead responsibility for managing and delivering waste contracts, including our Waste PFI and support the wider commercial development of all tradeable services within Neighbourhood Services.

Initially you will work predominantly from home and there will only be an occasional requirement to be physically present in the workplace, this is to protect our staff and communities from the risk of Covid transmission. Even once these restrictions are eased there will be opportunities for this post holder to regularly work agilely from any location.

Should you wish to discuss this vacancy informally, please contact Greg Gavin, Head of Neighbourhood Services on 01670 622278.

We are offering:
- A starting salary of £48,402

- A wide range of staff benefits including a competitive annual leave provision
- Flexible working arrangements
