The Role:

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is one of the most culturally and economically diverse boroughs in London.  The Royal Borough is less than 5 square miles in area, so you are never far from a famous landmark or a high profile business.   Large scale events include the Notting Hill Carnival and the Chelsea Flower Show.  This diversity presents interesting health and safety challenges as we try to protect our residents, employees and visitors. 

An opportunity has arisen in the Health and Safety Team, for an Environmental Health Officer / Health and Safety Practitioner.  The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out a wide range of health and safety functions, including carrying out health and safety inspections; responding to our resident’s concerns and enquiries; and investigating workplace accidents.

You will also participate in Environmental Health’s contribution to ensuring an effective response to Covid-19 including inspecting businesses to ensure Covid compliance, investigation of Covid-19 incidents, providing advice to residents and businesses on Covid-19 matters, and reviewing Covid risk assessments. You will also have the opportunity to attend Outbreak Management Teams and participate in Contact Tracing duties

About You:

To be considered for this post you will be a qualified to Level 6 in Environmental Health or Health and Safety. Applications from newly qualified graduates are welcome

The ideal candidate will have knowledge/understanding of Health and Safety legislation. 

As a confident and motivated individual you will have the ability to effectively manage a caseload, carry out inspections, review risk assessments and investigate major incidents.  

You will be an excellent communicator (both verbal and written) and will be adept at providing excellent customer care. You should be able to explain complex and technical health and safety matters clearly and concisely to managers, employees and service users.

Role Requirements:

The post holder is responsible for:

  • Carrying out inspections to ensure that safety standards are met
  • Visiting businesses to ensure Covid compliance
  • Investigating Covid-19 incidents
  • Reviewing risk assessments including Covid risk assessments
  • Investigating resident concerns
  • Answering resident / business queries
  • Investigating workplace accidents
  • Conducting legal action under the supervision of the Principal EHO / manager
  • Writing detailed reports, maintaining electronic and written case file notes and keep the database up-to-date as appropriate
  • Participating in projects that improve public safety or delivery of the service

We work in partnership with Hampshire County Council (HCC) who deliver many transactional services on our behalf. Although most communications will be from HCC, all selection and appointment decisions will be made by RBKC. Certain services are shared across more than one Council area to nearby neighbouring Authorities. This enhances delivery and reduces costs.
