City of York Council have an exciting opportunity for an experienced transport professional to lead our Traffic Team.

You will develop the overall approach to traffic management in the city and manage the work of the Traffic Team to deliver the local authorities obligations and duties under the Highways Act, New Roads & Street Works Act and Traffic Management Act.

The Traffic Team’s duties are wide ranging, including Traffic Regulation Orders, traffic signs, parking, highway licensing as well as dealing with obstructions and encroachments. The role involves a significant level of contact, consultation and engagement with residents and customers, businesses and other Council departments.

We are looking for candidates with a strong track record in local authority highway network management and a good working knowledge of the relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks. You will also need to demonstrate your ability to deal with pressure and prioritise workloads for you and your team.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C1: Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly. Only a conceptually difficult subject can hinder a natural, smooth flow of language.
