About us

This is your chance to make a lasting impact on our county. From developing the connected transport networks of the future and driving sustainable business growth to ambitious urban regeneration, the future of Buckinghamshire's infrastructure and environment is in your hands.

We have a number of ambitious projects underway and many more planned. We need talented and experienced project managers and team leaders to deliver our programme of works and drive forward these key infrastructure projects.

About the role

Buckinghamshire Council has exciting opportunities to work on regeneration and infrastructure projects as the economy and population of Buckinghamshire grows.

We're recruiting for Team Leaders and Project Managers to work within our Highways Infrastructure Projects team. The team are delivering a range of highway improvements from sustainable travel projects, junction improvements and new link roads to town centre regeneration, and have a significantly expanding order book of projects with complex funding arrangements that we need you to manage.

The projects we deliver are challenging, complex, interesting and provide real benefit to Buckinghamshire's residents and businesses.

Delivering multi million pounds worth of infrastructure projects you will need to work across organisations to deliver the new infrastructure required to support the growth within Buckinghamshire.

We're offering you the chance to help change the world of Buckinghamshire for the better. As a member of our team, you will tackle key projects designed to improve our environment and economy. You can be sure that you'll be a valued member of our team, with the power to make an impact from day one.

Working closely with the Head of Highways Infrastructure Projects, your role will be to programme manage a range of projects and line manage a team of project managers to deliver projects efficiently and effectively. You'll also act as the 'customer account manager', receiving initial contact from clients regarding new projects and acting as a point of escalation. You'll ensure that projects are delivered on time and to budget, which will require you to lead on the production and delivery of project documentation, monitor budgets, prioritise resources, as well as establishing Programme and Project boards with clearly set governance and accountability throughout the project structure.

About you

You'll come to us with substantial experience of managing commercial or public sector capital highways projects, as well as leading and directing multi-disciplined project teams and groups working on major projects across a range of diverse professional disciplines, Council directorates and stakeholders. With excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you'll be experienced in partnership working, which will enable you to develop relationships with key clients and partners in delivering our programme of work. With demonstrable experience in financial and contract management, you'll also have the ability to support the preparation of tenders and contracts.

Highly organised and IT-literate, you are an experienced project management professional. You can co-ordinate partners, contribute to (and ideally manage) virtual teams and work with stakeholders, drawing on your strong communication skills. Well versed in standard MS Office and MS Project software, you are also a capable financial manager, ensuring your projects don't go over budget or deadline.

Experience of construction projects and commissioning of consultants along with knowledge of Prince 2 methodology is desirable, and you will have a determined, can-do approach, committed to success.

Educated to degree level or equivalent, a recognised formal project management qualification would be highly desirable for these roles.

Other information

Where our roles are customer-facing and you are required to speak to members of the public, the ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the role.

There will often be a need to travel to sites and meetings at various locations so access to a vehicle is essential.

Our response as an employer to Covid-19 has shaped the way we want to work in the future. Microsoft Teams, Skype and vlogs from our Senior Leadership Team have all played their part in allowing us to become even more flexible in how, when and where our teams work. As long as it works for us too, we actively encourage our colleagues to adopt a flexible working approach and take control of their work-life balance.

Our main office is in Aylesbury but we see this role being predominantly home based with work based meetings and site visits.

Candidates will be invited to interview, which will take place virtually through Microsoft Teams.

Interviews will take place weeks commencing 31 Aug & 7 Sept.
