Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) is seeking to recruit two Highway Rangers within our Contracts and Technical Services department to be based in the Council’s depot in Waltham Abbey, Essex. The service was previously provided by Essex Highways on behalf of EFDC but it is now returning in house. The role of the Highway Rangers will be to undertake minor highway and street maintenance works referred from the Local Highway Panel. The successful applicants will be a visible presence representing the Council in the district and will act as ambassadors for the team.

The Highway Rangers will undertake works across the District that are too small to give to a contractor but make a huge difference to the appearance of the area. These will include small scale maintenance works such as repainting or straightening a signpost, cutting back vegetation that is obscuring a road sign, strimming an overgrown highway verge or cleaning the road signs in an area. Other tasks may include re-setting paving slabs around trees or in town centres that have become dislodged or repairing fencing in a highway verge or removing illegal fly posting.

The post holders will work together as a team to undertake maintenance and improvement works across the district. The district is a mix of urban and rural areas and there will be a variety of tasks to undertake meaning adaptability will be needed. A full and clean driving license will be required in order to drive and be responsible for a Council vehicle, license checks will be undertaken and experience of driving commercial vehicles would be a benefit.

The Highway Rangers will be experienced and ideally qualified in a range of highway maintenance tasks and the use of hand tools such as hedge trimmers and will be responsible for their health and safety measures to protect themselves and others whilst working.

Interviews would be expected to be undertaken over Zoom or other means due to the impact of the current corona virus pandemic.
