Job Details

COVID-19 is not only the largest economic and social shock to hit this country since the Second World War, it’s the defining leadership challenge in generations. With every area of public life profoundly affected, the Civil Service in England has developed an unprecedented strategic plan to help the Government guide the nation through these uncertain times. And your experience could prove invaluable.

In response to this complex and rapidly evolving challenge, we are bringing together leaders from all over government, and we’re now looking to add to them with the highest calibre professionals.

At this momentous point, Deputy Director roles represent nothing less than a career-defining opportunity.

Whether your experience is from inside or outside of the Civil Service, what’s on offer is a career-defining experience. Your inspirational leadership qualities, fresh perspectives and ability work on a multitude of emerging priorities will be hugely influential in shaping the Government’s response to the pandemic.

We have Deputy Director opportunities across multiple departments, including the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, the Department for Health & Social Care, the Department for Transport and the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government. These organisations have very substantial budgets, complex cross-cutting programmes and a nationwide remit you simply won’t find anywhere else.

We’re looking for significant experience of engaging at C-Suite and Board levels, excellent partnership-building and influencing skills across departments, and the ability to work creatively at very fast pace. You’ll need to see ambiguity as an opportunity for innovation and be motivated by the chance to help the Government pilot the country through this unparalleled period.

In return, you can look forward to an impressive package including valuable civil service pension, generous annual leave and much else.

We are open to all forms of contract types: permanent, fixed-term and secondments among them. Naturally, at present, these roles will be based at home, but some travel to London in the longer-term may be necessary as the situation in the country evolves.

Closing date: 16 June 2020.
