Job Purpose
Children and Families is recognised as a service in which social work can develop and prosper, with a culture of collaboration, integrity and compassion; promoting the development and wellbeing of children, young people and their families; protecting them from neglect and abuse. Working together with partners delivering a range of early help, family support and effective social work interventions which build resilience, remove barriers and enable children and young people to look forward to a brighter future.

The Caretaker and General Hand will be responsible for the maintenance of equipment and buildings to ensure the safety and security of properties and undertake minor repairs and decorating as appropriate. In addition, this will incorporate gardening duties.

Utilising skills and experience in property maintenance and a knowledge of equipment, will be important elements in undertaking this role effectively.

Service/Functional Accountabilities
  • Responsible for ensuring all safety equipment and security systems are effectively maintained.
  • Contributes to general property maintenance by ensuing minor repairs and property upkeep are conducted to a high standard.
  • Responsible for undertaking routine vehicle checks, on occasion.
  • Responsible for reporting issues and maintaining appropriate records with regard to systems i.e. fire alarms. Liaising with external contractors when necessary, to ensure speedy resolution of issues.
  • Responsible for maintaining grounds to a high standard to ensure safety and effective management of gardens.
  • Contributes to cleaning and laundry duties within the home.
  • Specific individual and shared targets and objectives are defined annually within the performance management framework.
  • Skills and Knowledge

  • Educated to RQF level 2 (GCSE) or equivalent by experience, which may include specific practical qualifications such as apprenticeships.
  • Evidence of Health and Safety experience, relevant qualifications and recent training.
  • Evidence of a First Aid qualification, training and experience.
  • Horticultural experience including the use of appropriate machinery, such as strimmers, mowers, cutters and experience of working in a gardening team.
  • Experience of undertaking building repairs, internal and external.
  • Understanding of working in a setting that provides residential care to children and young people.

  • As part of employment with Essex County Council should your role require a DBS check you will be required to register with the DBS update service. The DBS update service ensures all registered DBS certificates are kept up to date and allows authorised parties to view the status of your certificate.
