Job Details

Camden is at the heart of London’s economy, a centre of global innovation where start-ups rub up against tech giants and world-leading universities. But we know that citizens don’t always share in that growth, with too many local people living in in-work poverty or locked out of employment all together. The Inclusive Economy team has a mission to change that and we’re looking for a number of roles (£40-£48k) that can help take our ambitious programme of work forward.

We’re not your typical economic development team and take our cue from Camden 2025, a five-year vision for the borough shaped directly by a Citizens’ Assembly.  We think broadly about London’s economy and how it works focusing on:

  • Work and livelihood -  supporting good work that enables people to thrive rather than just jobs and GVA growth
  • Life-long learning – supporting people to access an academic and vocational education relevant to the 21st century with our pioneering STEAM programme and award-winning apprenticeship offer
  • Voice - empowering citizens and communities so that they can shape the way decisions are made about the local economy, ensuring we maximize the benefit for local communities
  • Reform  - working with partners to make an evidence-based case for change to nationally-focused employment, skills and welfare services
  • Sustainable growth – working to ensure economic development is supports the Camden’s declaration of a climate emergency and the thinking from our recent Citizens’ Assembly on climate change.

What are we doing?

Over the next three years we will be investing £5m in transforming the system of employment support in Camden, focusing on creating good work in partnership with our business community and develop neighbourhood hubs that provide bespoke support, focused on relationships.

Working with more than a 100 world-leading institutions in the Knowledge Quarter, London’s premier innovation district, to develop a thirty-year strategy to shape an inclusive economy with local citizens at its heart

Taking forward the work of our award-winning STEAM Commission, working with schools and employers like Google and Ted Baker to shape a 21st century curriculum.

We’re looking for people who are clever, curious and compassionate but could come from a variety of backgrounds including:

  • Research and analysts roles in think tanks

  • Policy roles in Whitehall

  • Start-ups and business support

  • Economic Development, Regeneration and project delivery

Above all you will be passionate about reforming London’s economy and see yourself as an agent of change, with the tenacity to get things done.

You can build effective partnerships:  with businesses, with service providers and with external organisations. You can build strong relationships and understand the impact this has in delivering for our residents and businesses.

You have an adaptable approach: and have taken responsibility for delivering key projects to support the core objectives of an organisation. You can work flexibly across a range of council services and have experience in reporting directly to senior stakeholders.

You are strategic and know how to deliver a project: whilst translating your insight into a strategic action plan. You know how to weigh up a range of different options, and make a decision to deliver maximum social value. You can inspire others around this course of action.

You take a wider view: and understand the importance of supporting an inclusive economy within Camden. You have worked with organisations to deliver growth for businesses and the wider community in which they are based.

You are a collaborator by nature: you recognise that projects work best when they are a shared endeavour, and have experience working with other services or providers to achieve shared aims.

You are innovative: and enthusiastic about developing creative solutions to problem solving.
