About the role

An opportunity has arisen within Surrey County Council's Highway Design & Delivery Team, based in Merrow, Guildford. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with relevant experience, who can make a valuable contribution towards improving the highway network.

Based within the Highway Design & Delivery Team, within the Local Highway Services Group, you will liaise with a broad range of other partners and stakeholders, acting on behalf of the Client organisation.

The dynamic team focuses on designing and implementing highway improvements, to programme and budget, whilst at the same time providing technical advice and guidance across the whole of the Highways Service and to other partners (e.g. Districts and Boroughs).

The Role - The Senior Design Engineer will design and deliver specified highway projects as part of the annual local improvements programme funded from both the council's capital and third party budgets. The post holder will be responsible for managing the design cycle from concept through to delivery on site. Schemes are often complex, integrated and sustainable transport solutions, including traffic management, safety, cycling and bus improvement schemes, as well as major projects.

It is expected that the post holder will support and mentor junior staff with their training and development and will be required to lead project / virtual teams on a regular basis. 

To be shortlisted for interview your application will clearly evidence:

  • Your skills as a design engineer, including being an advanced user of AutoCAD along with relevant highway design packages
  • You have successfully designed and implemented a range of highway improvement schemes
  • An in depth knowledge of engineering design related legislation and an ability to provide technical advice
  • At least 6 years relevant post qualification experience. Qualification likely to be HNC/HND in Civil Engineering with membership of a professional body.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
