Bedford is growing at a fast pace and we are investing heavily in our highways infrastructure.  With significant projects such as our £20 million Bedford 2020 congestion relief programme, major development works to support housing and business growth and public realm improvement works. 

To support the delivery of this challenging and varied work we have created a new Senior Engineer role within our Street Lighting team.

Bedford Borough Council is looking for an ambitious and experienced Senior Street Lighting Engineer to join the Engineering Services team.  Candidates will be expected to provide a professional Civil Engineering Consultancy service to internal and external clients, by programming, delivering, controlling and directing Street Lighting projects in a commercial and customer focussed way which achieves programmes, meets performance and budgetary targets, generates an income for the Environment Directorate and meets the Councils Corporate Objectives.

Candidates will be expected to lead in the delivery of professional and technical services for all electrical engineering aspects of highway and amenity lighting construction and maintenance projects.  This is to include design, site supervisory and contractual responsibilities and the development of the Council’s long term street lighting strategy and programme. 

They should be commercially focussed, acting to maximise income opportunities and negotiating successfully with contractors and developers to ensure cost effectiveness without compromising quality or safety.  They will also maintain and update the Council’s street lighting asset management system (Insight) and Central Management System (Telensa).

Qualifications required – Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar.

Industry experience required – 5+ years.

Professional qualification required – Member of professional institution e.g. Institution of Lighting Professionals (MILP or AMILP).  Completion or part completion of the ILP’s Exterior Lighting Diploma or equivalent.
