Job Details

We’re seeking an experienced Conservation Officer to work in the Planning Policy Team in the Royal Borough’s Planning and Building Control service. Working within a small team, you’ll play a proactive role in protecting and enhancing Royal Greenwich’s extensive historic built environment.

This includes the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site with its Baroque and Palladian buildings, and 23 conservation areas that range from the rich Jacobean detailing in Charlton Village to the picturesque garden suburb design of the Progress Estate to striking avant-garde design in Blackheath Park. Our newest conservation area in Woolwich highlights the town centre’s fine civic, commercial, cultural and ecclesiastical architecture spanning the Georgian era to the early 20thcentury.

You’ll be responsible for providing specialist advice and guidance on the full range of heritage matters, ensuring that the highest possible design standards are achieved within new development. In addition to providing advice to Development Management on all scales of proposals throughout the planning process, you’ll also manage a diverse listed building caseload, and provide technical and design advice to listed building occupiers and those in conservation areas.

In addition to a good salary package, we offer a range of benefits including flexible working, generous annual leave, interest free season ticket loan and a career average pension scheme.

About you

The successful applicant will need to have an appropriate qualification in Building Conservation, Town Planning, Architecture or a related discipline. You’ll need to demonstrate a proven ability to make competent decisions on listed building and conservation area related matters, complemented by a good understanding of current legislation, policy, guidance and best practice in relation to planning and heritage matters.

Good communication skills and the ability to respond confidently in a variety of situations are essential. We are ideally looking for someone who has experience of working on major planning applications, and who understands local authority policies and procedures.

Eligibility for membership of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) is desirable but not essential.
