Transport Inspectors – Land & Maritime Security

Department for Transport

£33,990 - £36,880

London base, with extensive travel

About us

The Department for Transport (DfT) works with a range of agencies and partners to support the nation’s transport network. Our Maritime and Land Transport Security teams have key roles to play in the Government's counter-terrorism strategy. Working alongside other police and security services, their aim is to protect the travelling public, maritime and rail transport facilities, and those employed in the transport industries.

The role

Joining us as a Transport Security Inspector, within either Maritime Security or Land Transport Security, you will monitor and assess industry compliance against the UK land and maritime security regulations. In practice this means undertaking observations, inspections, audits and tests to measure security risks and improve security standards at sites that, for example, handle dangerous goods. You will also follow-up on transport security breaches.  We operate UK-wide and occasionally internationally, so travel is all part of the role.

About you

While regulatory or security experience would be helpful, it is not essential. We are looking for people with the ability to work flexibly, under pressure and to tight timescales, often with limited supervision. Ultimately, relationship-building skills will be just as important as regulatory and security knowledge: to ensure compliance and promote best practice, you must be capable of establishing trust with industry representatives. As your expertise develops, you may also assist with visits from foreign government officials to improve overseas cooperation. A full UK driving licence is essential, and you’ll be willing to undergo medical checks and security clearance.

Company

We work with our agencies and partners to support the transport network that helps the UK’s businesses and gets people and goods travelling around the country. We plan and invest in transport infrastructure to keep the UK on the move.
