Senior Bridge Engineer & Team Leader

Salary: £33,136 – £37,107 per annum
Somerset County Council is responsible for the management and maintenance of the County’s Highway bridge, culvert and retaining wall stock which stands at over 2500 structures. This stock contains a wide variety of asset types in respect of their form, construction, material, span and location. There are a significant number of masonry arches and simply supported reinforced concrete slabs as well as retaining walls of different construction forms and, of course, large multi-span structures, all located in both rural and urban areas. The oldest asset is Tarr Steps a 17 span Clapper Bridge reportedly dating back to prehistoric times located on Exmoor. We also have a bascule bridge, many swing bridges, footbridges, fords, railway, road and watercourse structures in our diverse stock. A vacancy has arisen for a Senior Bridge Engineer & Team Leader within this team which is based in Taunton.
About the job
A key member of the Service, you will be responsible for managing a small team; Developing, managing and delivering a wide range of bridge or structure improvement and maintenance projects and programmes using a combination of professional and technical knowledge and interpersonal skills, including consultation and negotiation skills; Mentoring support to team members; Playing a key part in the procurement of a replacement Structures Framework Contract; Procuring, managing, directing, negotiating, agreeing payments and settling claims through SCC’s existing Structures Framework Contractor, the Professional Services Contract and other third party resources; Providing advice, guidance and support to both internal and external parties including private developers, on a wide range of highway structure issues including; technical highway structure design standards, current highway legislation and legal agreements and environmental, ensuring that the statutory requirements of the County Council as the highway authority are met
You will hold a suitable professional qualification and have managerial experience and skills; Will have local government knowledge; Will have in-depth knowledge of technical highway structure design and maintenance, highway legislation and agreements, “best practice” and Health & Safety in the highway/construction industry; Will have the ability to work with a high degree of interruptions and demands for advice, cope with competing deadlines and deal positively with change, Will be able to remain calm in difficult or uncertain situations; Will be IT literate As a key member of the group the you will be expected to promote the image of the County Council and embrace a culture of customer care to ensure successful delivery of a quality service in Somerset.
