Somerset County Council is responsible for the management and maintenance of the County’s Highway bridge, culvert and retaining wall stock which stands at over 2500 structures. This stock contains a wide variety of asset types in respect of their form, construction, material, span and location. There are a significant number of masonry arches and simply supported reinforced concrete slabs as well as retaining walls of different construction forms and, of course, large multi-span structures, all located in both rural and urban areas. The oldest asset is Tarr Steps a 17 span Clapper Bridge reportedly dating back to prehistoric times located on Exmoor. We also have a bascule bridge, many swing bridges, footbridges, fords, railway, road and watercourse structures in our diverse stock. A vacancy has arisen for a Bridge Engineer within this team which is based in Taunton.
About the job
As a key member of the Service, you could be involved in bridge/structure improvement and maintenance projects, design and/or assessment activities, inspection tasks, asset management, structural monitoring and/or contractor/consultant management. As a team member you will support, or even lead, others using a combination of professional and technical knowledge and interpersonal skills, including consultation and negotiation. You will provide mentoring support to colleagues; Provide advice, guidance and support to both internal and external parties including private developers, on a wide range of highway structure issues; Assist in the negotiation and settling of claims and Work to technical highway structure design standards, current highway legislation and legal agreements and environmental legislation, ensuring that the statutory requirements of the County Council as the highway authority are met
You will be enthusiastic, IT literate and have a relevant degree or are working towards one ideally with suitable structures experience including design and assessments. You may have, be working towards or considering becoming a member of an appropriate professional body. You will ideally have local government knowledge and a working knowledge of technical highway structure design, assessment, inspection and/or maintenance and highway legislation and agreements, “best practice” and Health & Safety in the highway/construction industry As a key member of the group the you will be expected to promote the image of the County Council and embrace a culture of customer care to ensure successful delivery of a quality service in Somerset.
